On Thursday September 30th a small version of the iconic artwork the Sphinx was unveiled at our premises in De Maaspoort in Venlo. The original Sphinx was donated to the city of Venlo in 1993 by Jacques and Ellen Scheuten of Scheuten Glas in honour of its 650th anniversary. The design came from the Venlo artist Fons Schobbers. In October 2013, the sculpture was placed. Unfortunately, the artwork had to be demolished after a few months due to irreparable damage caused by cracks.
A small version of the Sphinx is now placed on the second floor near the entrance of restaurant Cabillaud. "A beautiful work of art. We are proud and happy to be able to make this work accessible to a large audience thanks to a loan from the Scheuten Foundation." Says the managing director of De Maaspoort, Leon Thommassen.
Ellen Scheuten was present as chairman together with the other board members of the Scheuten Foundation, Joep van de Voort and Hay Thissen, at the unveiling of the statue in the Maaspoort. Afterwards they toasted together and enjoyed a dinner at Cabillaud.
